Sweat glistening off dark defined arms
Chiseled by physical endeavor,
A sign of a true laborer.
An earnest face
With dark eyes deepened by adversity,
Strong defined hands, weathered and roughened by poverty.
You stop your road-side work
To look up at me:
Driving past in my air conditioned Mercedes.
Healthy off wealth and educated,
With long plaited hair and large silver hoop earrings.
Soft toffee brown skin,
Lathered with scented soaps and creams.
Our eyes meet
For that fleeting moment
I see you. You see me.
In our gazes embrace,
There is a connection that we do possess.
Yet divided by ascribed circumstance,
Classified into separate social ranks.
We know this connection can never manifest into any real relation
Despite our genuine intentions
Society does not make any exceptions.
It a shame you’ll never get to know me,
A shame we will never meet again.
Never get a chance to pursue this unlikely romance,
Unless by chance,
But even that requires a little finance.
Still we stare at each other,
Despite the dead hope that stares back.
Until the moments passed;
As the common urban story foretells:
Of the tragic romance between
The Ghetto Prince
And Suburbian Princess.
THE MEETING OF THE GHETTO PRINCE AND SUBURBIAN PRINCESS

Am liking this, yeah it makes me see how it can be so hard to reach to the good things although they might seem to be an eye sight away, it also makes me see the gap btwn the poor and the rich despite their connections.
Powerful piece, great concept, keep inking.

Love that line...
This piece is awesome. I love your imagery, even in stating (sad) facts.

no no no, this is too sad. too painful. what a beautiful poem. the way u play with the words to describe the whole situation and even though u don't express it literally, the whole poem leaks of regret. this guy's face is one of those faces that you'll never forget. one of those faces that will always be combined with 'what ifs'
on a personal note, I still think it's wrong and stupid (no offense) to automatically deny a possible relationship (whether it be lover or friend) because that other person is from a different social class. yeah people will talk, yeah u'll go through hard times. so what? if u'll make it, it'll be a proof of how strong ur relationship is/was. if u don't make it, then at least u tried and there are no more 'what ifs'
i personally cant stand 'what ifs'. i prefer taking risks and i never regret. but that's just me
